Arnold Schwarzenegger's Audemars Piguet Royal Oak "End of Days" Offshore Wristwatch

The End of Days is the king of the Royal Oak Offshore Audemars Piguet Chronographs. Arnold Schwarzenegger wore it in the movie "End of Days" and made of the wristwatch the collectible timepiece it is.
Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger was born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian American bodybuilder, actor, businessman, and politician, currently serving as the 38th Governor of the state of California.

Schwarzenegger began weight-training at fifteen. He was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at age 22 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest a total of seven times. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent face in the bodybuilding sport long after his retirement, and has written several books and numerous articles on the sport.

Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon, noted for his lead role in such films as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator. He was nicknamed the "Austrian Oak" and the "Styrian Oak" in his bodybuilding days, "Arnold Strong" and "Arnie" during his acting career, and more recently the "Governator" (a portmanteau of Governor and the Terminator, one of his film roles).

As a Republican, he was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace then-Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003, to serve the remainder of Davis's term. Schwarzenegger was then re-elected on November 7, 2006, in California's 2006 gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor, defeating Democrat Phil Angelides, who was California State Treasurer at the time. Schwarzenegger was sworn in for a second term on January 5, 2007. In May 2004 and 2007, he was named as one of the Time 100 people who help shape the world.

In 1998 Arnold Schwarzenegger, long time collector of watches, visited Audemars Piguet’s headquarters in Le Brassus (Switzerland) in Vallée de Joux. It was then that the collaboration between the legendary watch manufacturer and Schwarzenegger began. One year later, the film “End of Days” was introduced with the Royal Oak Offshore timepiece being worn by Arnold. The collaboration continued and the establishment of an on-going charitable partnership between Audemars Piguet and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who is now the 38th Governor of the State of California, begun.

In 2007, Audemars Piguet and Governor Schwarzenegger introduced no less than three timepieces to their collection of limited-editions. Arnold’s After-School All-Stars, the charity founded by the Governor in 1993, includes a Royal Oak Offshore “Arnold’s All-Stars” Chronograph with date and small seconds, a Jules Audemars Chronograph & Perpetual Calendar and a Jules Audemars Dual Time power reserve. The proceeds from the sales of just these three timepieces are expected to raise nearly $1.5 million for the charity.

After-School All-Stars provides comprehensive after school programs that are fun for kids and also keeps them safe and helps them achieve success in school and life by improving kids’ lives by nurturing their minds, bodies and spirits through programs that incorporate independent learning, academics and enrichment activities. Patek Philippe: Trossi Leggenda

A wristwatch belonging to an Italian mogul who takes pride in having won Grand Prix races and was president of Ferrari generated a sales of £1.1million against its pre-auction estimate of $1.9 million after selling off his gold Patek Philippe timepiece at Sothey’s Geneva auction house.

Count Carlo Felice Trossi’s priciest possession called the “Trossi Leggenda”, described as “really revolutionary” by experts, was the highlight amidst the other 200 timepieces. Trossi by profession was a racing driver, pilot and speedboat racer whose motor-racing triumphs count the 1947 Italian Grand Prix. Besides this another gold Rolex known as “Oyster Daytona Paul Newman” dating back to 1980 got sold for £76,000 almost two-fold of its pre-auction estimate of £25,000 to £40,000. The watch was christened after the Florida car race and for the American actor who helped promote this style.

Count Carlo Felice Trossi was born in Biella, Italy, April 27, 1908 and died in Milan, May 9, 1949. Trossi was an Italian race car driver and auto constructor. During his career, he raced for two teams, Mercedes-Benz and Alfa Romeo. He won the 1947 Italian Grand Prix and the 1948 Swiss Grand Prix. He died at only 41 years of age (brain tumor).

Trossi backed one of the most unusual Grand Prix cars, the Trossi Monaco of 1934. This car featured a 16 cylinder, two stroke cycle, two row radial, air cooled engine and an aircraft-like body designed by Augusto Monaco. The car was a spectacular failure and never raced in a Grand Prix event.

MIKA selected world-renowned timepiece watchmaker, PIAGET, to wear in his new album (The Boy Who Knew Too Much) video: Rain.

 Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr, MIKA

Mika was born on 18 August 1983 under Michael Holbrook Penniman Jr’s name. He is a London-based, Grammy-nominated and BRIT Award-winning singer-songwriter, who has a recording contract with Casablanca Records and Universal Music. He rose to fame at the start of 2007.

Mika was born in
Beirut, the third of five children born to a Lebanese mother and an American father. When he was a year old his family was forced to leave war-torn Lebanon and moved to Paris After listening to Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box," he wrote his first song, which he describes as an "awful" piano instrumental called "Angry". The first piano piece he learned to play was «Les Champs-Élysées» from Joe Dassin. The family moved to London when he was nine years old. There, he attended the Lycée Français Charles de Gaulle, where he experienced severe bullying. He also had problems with dyslexia. In response to these experiences, Mika was home-schooled by his mother at the age of 11, for six to eight months. He then attended St Philip's School in Kensington where he was the head of the Schola Cantorum (the St Philip's Choir). Later he attended Westminster School and the Royal College of Music, which he left to record his first album at Casablanca Records. He has also slightly altered his given name, Mica, changing the "c" to a "k" because he was frustrated by how often people would mispronounce it.

MIKA has selected world-renowned timepiece maker, PIAGET, to wear in his latest music video “Rain” from his new album, The Boy Who Knew Too Much. The song “Rain” continues the international success of Mika and its music video does not disappoint. Piaget was the natural partner for this imaginative, vibrant, high-energy video that embodies Mika’s playful and exuberant style.

A superb and elegant 18 carat pink gold and chocolate brown dial Piaget Altiplano watch adorns Mika’s wrist throughout his performance. Loyal to its characteristic pure lines and well-respected classicism, this watch is equipped with an ultra-thin hand-wound movement of 2.5 mm thickness. The sapphire crystal back enables to admire all aspects of the movement decoration, such as circular Cotes de Geneve and blued screws which are the signature features of Piaget movements. This iconic ultra thin watch perfectly captures the modern, brightly coloured, graphic essence of this music video.

Madoff auction welcomes bids on wristwatches like: Rolex, Ulysse Nardin, Blancpain, Piaget, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, IWC and Jaeger LeCoultre.

(Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff)

Bernard Lawrence "Bernie" Madoff was born on April 29, 1938. He is the former Chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange and the admitted operator of the Ponzi scheme that might be "the largest investment fraud in Wall Street history".
In March 2009, Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 felonies and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive Ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars. Madoff said he began the Ponzi scheme in the early 1990s. However, federal investigators believe the fraud began as early as the 1980s. The amount missing from client accounts, including fabricated gains, was almost $65 billion. The court appointed trustee estimated actual losses to investors of $18 billion. On June 29, 2009, he was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the maximum allowed.
Madoff founded the Wall Street firm Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC in 1960, and was its chairman until his arrest on December 11, 2008. The firm was one of the top market maker businesses on Wall Street, which bypassed "specialist" firms by directly executing orders over the counter from retail brokers.
On December 10, 2008, Madoff's sons told authorities that their father had just confessed to them that the asset management arm of his firm was a massive Ponzi scheme, and quoting him as saying it was "one big lie". The following day, FBI agents arrested Madoff and charged him with one count of securities fraud. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had previously conducted several investigations into Madoff's business practices since 1992, which critics contend were incompetently handled.

Madoff lots are 196-299 & 301-386.

Origins of Friday the 13th

For the superstitious people , there is no single day of the year more terrifying than Friday the 13th. Popular superstition, bad luck is sure to befall a person on this day. Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute assures that up to 21 million people in the United States today suffer from a morbid and irrational fear of Friday the 13th.
For paraskevidekatriaphobics (people intensely afraid of Friday the 13th), 2009 was an especially dreadful year, sporting three: one in February, March, and November as it contains three thirteen’s dates.

It may be surprising to most people that the Friday the 13th superstition is a relatively new one, originating in the early 20th century. Friday the 13th superstition is thought to have started at the Knights Templar, a military order established in 1118 to defend the Christian city of Jerusalem. After the First Crusade and the capture of Jerusalem from the Muslims, protection of Jerusalem and the outlying Kingdom of Outremer was left to the knights. When the city was recaptured by Saladin’s Muslim forces in 1187 and all subsequent attempts by Christian Crusades to retake the city failed, the Knights Templar found themselves out of work. However, they had become extremely wealthy and powerful from their military conquests, and they never disbanded their organization or changed the clandestine ways their meetings were held. Their power and secrecy attracted the attention and distrust of King Philip IV of France. On Friday, October 13, 1307, the king sent out an order to arrest all the Knights Templar in France, accusing them of blasphemy and witchcraft. Many were burned alive, including the group’s Grand Master, Jacques de Molay.

Another superstition, the one in which if 13 people sit together at a table, one will die within a year. This version has been documented as far back as late 17th century Europe in the memoirs of John Wilmot, the earl of Rochester. Many variations on this superstition abound, including that if the 13 sit together, the first to rise from the table will die, the group can avert death by joining hands and rising as one, and if someone sneezes, the oldest or youngest will die within a year.

The 13 at a table superstition is generally thought to have originated from the Last Supper, where Jesus and his 12 disciples sat down for one last Passover meal, and Judas, one of the 13, betrayed Jesus to his death.

Before this superstition however, ancient cultures considered the number 13 by itself to be unlucky. Native Americans, Mayans, Ancient Egyptians, and even Neanderthals also considered this number as a bad luck one. Today, we carry on this tradition by omitting the 13th floor from most skyscrapers and the 13th row from many airplanes.

Abraham-Louis Breguet's History

Breguet is a manufacturer of luxury watches, founded by Abraham Louis Breguet in Paris in 1775. Currently part of The Swatch Group, its timepieces are now (since 1976) produced in the Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. Breguet watches are often easily recognized for their coin-edge cases, guilloché dials and blue pomme hands.
Breguet was founded in 1775 by Abraham-Louis Breguet at the Quai de l'Horloge (Ile de la Cite, Paris) following his marriage to the daughter of a prosperous French bourgeois. Following his introduction to the court, whereupon Queen Marie-Antoinette grew fascinated by Breguet's unique self-winding watch, Louis XVI bought several of his watches. Marie Antoinette commissioned the watch that was to contain every watch function known at that time, including the following: a clock, a perpetual calendar, a repeater, a thermometer, a chronograph, a power-reserve and a pare-chute.

Abraham Louis Breguet is probably greatest genius of watchmaking that ever lived. Inventor of numerous creations like the Breguet Spiral (nowadays used in every quality watch and wristwatch), the tourbillon or the whirlwind (device created to compensate the gravity influences in balance spring in pocket watches). Breguet created the first Grande Complication in the history of horology through the Marie-Antoinette wristwatch, that was commissioned by the French queen's guard Monsieur de la Croizette with the order of being produced containing as much complications known and, them, made of gold. This watch was finished in 1827, meaning that neither the unfortunate queen (who was guillotined in 1793) nor the master watchmaker himself (Breguet died in 1823) ever saw the completed watch. The Marie-Antoinette was a self-winding watch with a perpetual calendar, equation of time indication and a minute repeater. It has disappeared since 1983 when it was stolen from the Jerusalem Institute of Islamic Art.

The First World War: Longines and Breitling watches

The First World War, also known as the First World War, the Great War, the World War (prior to the outbreak of the Second World War) and the War to End All Wars, was a global military conflict which involved most of the world's great powers, assembled in two opposing alliances: the Allies of World War I centred around the Triple Entente and the Central Powers, centred around the Triple Alliance. More than 70 million military personnel, including 60 million Europeans, were mobilized in one of the largest wars in history. More than 15 million people were killed, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in history.

By the war's end, four major imperial powers—the German, Russian, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires—had been militarily and politically defeated, with the last two ceasing to exist. The revolutionized Soviet Union emerged from the Russian Empire, while the map of central Europe was completely redrawn into numerous smaller states. The League of Nations was formed in the hope of preventing another such conflict. The European nationalism spawned by the war, the repercussions of Germany's defeat, and of the Treaty of Versailles would eventually lead to the beginning of World War II in 1939.

There were many wristwatch companies that grew significantly prior to the First World War such as Breitling or Longines, as many others.

Breitling, the wristwatch manufacturer of the world's finest men's timepieces, was formed in 1884 by Leon Breitling, who set up the company at the tender age of 24 in Switzerland. Together with The First World War, when aviation combat machine took off, Breitling turned its attention to the aviation field, to being able to time keep it. Then, as the Second World War came, they introduced the famous "Chronomat" watch which was the first in the world to be fitted with a circular slide rule to aid with navigation. The peak of Breitling's success came in 1962, when astronaut Scott Carpenter wore one of their watches in space - this watch became known as the "Cosmonaute" and is a very highly sought after timepiece today.
Breitling wristwatches remain the first choice of most of today's commercial and professional aviators and new models such as the Breitling Emergency which sends out a radio distress signal if the wearer becomes lost, continue to keep the brand at the forefront of technology as well as style.

On the other hand, Longines’ World War Two Pilot’s Wristwatch, with a Wheem’s aircraft navigational calculation bezel, gets to be a quite rare Longines Aircraft Navigation watch. Pioneered and developed by Longines during the 1930’s, with consultation from Charles Lindbergh, the famous American aviator who was the first pilot to cross the Atlantic solo and non stop. It was discontinued for a more convenient and easier-to-read version, which is a lot more common.

Longines’ World War Two Pilot’s Wristwatch was worn by one of the pilots responsible for transporting military aircraft across the North Atlantic to Great Britain during the early years of World War II.  Transporting aircraft on this route was a dangerous responsibility because of the extreme weather conditions and the very difficult navigation problems. Dead-accurate time was of the utmost importance to make pinpoint landings.
