The "BODE BANG", a Big Bang created for Bode Miller

Hublot's partnership with the American skier Bode Miller is being sealed by the
"Bode Bang", created by Hublot for the legendary champion of the skiing world.

Hublot has today announced its partnership with the Alpine ski world championships and the Nordic ski world championships in 2011. The watch brand is reinforcing its involvement with the world of skiing. Already partnered with the enfant terrible of skiing, the American Bode Miller, Hublot is also sponsoring Dario Cologna, the best Swiss cross-country skier ever.

The
enfant terrible of skiing and world champion in all disciplines in 2008, has had a Big Bang named in his honour. The partnership between the watchmaking brand and Bode Miller came about when the skier visited the manufacture's workshops.

Fascinated by the expertise and meticulousness of the watchmakers, he set out to craft his own watch. His meeting with Hublot CEO Jean-Claude Biver led to an immediate mutual understanding. Both passionate, direct men with an expressive and unconventional manner of speech, they quickly found a host of shared values.

The talented, feisty and determined skier, and the inventive, exceptionally energetic boss both demonstrate great generosity through their involvement in supporting humanitarian causes. The creation of the Bode Bang presented today is the fruit of this bond: together, they decided to divert some of the watch's royalties to the Turtle Ridge Foundation, founded by Bode Miller and his family in 2005 (www.turtleridgefoundation.org) to share his success with those less fortunate in life, an ambition equally dear to Jean-Claude Biver and Bode Miller.

January 18th, Nobel Peace Price Martin Luther King’s Day

(Nobel Peace Price Martin Luther King)

At the White House Rose Garden on November 2, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday to honour King. Observed for the first time on January 20, 1986, it is called Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Following President George H. W. Bush's 1992 proclamation, the holiday is observed on the third Monday of January each year, near the time of King's birthday. On January 17, 2000, for the first time, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially observed in all fifty U.S. states

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. His main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, and he has become a human rights icon: King is recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches. A Baptist minister, King became a civil rights activist early in his career. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history.

(Martin Luther King’s Rolex Datejust)

In 1964, King became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to end racial segregation and racial discrimination through civil disobedience and other non-violent means. By the time of his death in 1968, he had refocused his efforts on ending poverty and opposing the Vietnam War, both from a religious perspective. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was established as a U.S. national holiday in 1986.

King's main legacy was to secure progress on civil rights in the United States, which has enabled more Americans to reach their potential. He is frequently referenced as a human rights icon today. His name and legacy have often been invoked since his death as people have debated his likely position on various modern political issues.

Rolex is the wristwatch company chosen by not only celebrities but also communist revolutionists or idealist politicians, like Martin Luther King, or most of the Presidents from United States of America, who weren't able to resist to Hans Wildors creations.

Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, King of Holland, and his Breguet, No. 1717

Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, Prince Français, King of Holland, Comte de Saint-Leu was born on September 2, 1778 and died on July 25, 1846. He was the fifth surviving child and the fourth surviving son of Carlo Buonaparte and Letizia Ramolino. His brother and third son were the first and last emperors of France, Napoleon I, and Napoleon III.

Napoleon made him the King of Holland on June 5, 1806. Though the older brother, Napoleon, had intended for the younger brother to be little more than a French governor of Holland, Louis took his duties as the King seriously, calling himself Koning Lodewijk I, attempting to learn the Dutch language and trying hard to be a responsible, independent ruler of Holland. His attempt at speaking the Dutch language earned him some respect from his subjects. Louis also forced his court and ministers to speak only Dutch, and also to renounce their French Citizenships.

Two major tragedies occurred during the reign of Louis Bonaparte: the explosion of a cargo ship loadeded with gunpowder in the heart of the city of Leiden in 1807, and a major flood in Holland in 1809. In both instances, Louis personally and effectively oversaw local relief efforts, which helped earn him the moniker of Louis the Good.

(This Breguet, No. 1717, was sold to the King of Holland on June 7, 1808 for 2.400 francs).

Louis Bonaparte's reign of The Netherlands was short-lived, however, which was due to two factors. The first was that Napoleon wanted to reduce the value of French loans from Dutch investors by two-thirds, meaning a serious economic blow to the Netherlands. The second factor was the one that became the pretext for Napoleon's demand of Louis's abdication. As Napoleon was preparing an army for his invasion of Russia, he wanted troops from the entire region under his control, the allied border countries. Unfortunately for Louis, the English landed an army of 40,000 in 1808 in an attempt to capture Antwerp and Flushing. With Louis unable to defend his realm, France sent 80,000 militiamen and successfully repelled the invasion. Napoleon then suggested that Louis should abdicate, citing Louis's inability to protect Holland as a reason. Louis refused. Napoleon finally forcibly removed Louis from the Dutch throne and annexed the entire Kingdom of Holland on 1 July 1810.

Peugeot 200th anniversary: The SR1 Concept Car

French company Peugeot is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year. It's the world’s second oldest car manufacturer, the tenth largest car manufacturer, and with trucks, cars, motorcycles and bicycles, has the broadest range of mobility products in the world. It was in 1810 that Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot turned their father’s cereal mill into a steel foundry and took the Peugeot family into the industrial era.
Since then, Peugeot has associated its name and later its Lion emblem, to hand-saws, tools, steel crinoline stays, coffee grinders, salt and pepper grinders, bicycles, motorcycles, scooters, cars and light commercial vehicles.

Today, 200 years later, a new chapter in the Peugeot story is about to open with a further evolution of the brand; a new styling direction, a new corporate Lion badge and the launch of Mu by Peugeot, a new service aimed as much at those who don't drive a Peugeot as those that do.
The SR1 Concept Car
The SR1 embodies, according to Peugeot, a new stronger, more extreme and pure expression of the Peugeot Style of tomorrow. The SR1 incorporates HYbrid4 technology: a front-mounted 160 kW (218 bhp) 1.6 litre THP petrol engine combines with a rear electric motor developing 70 kW (95 bhp). In electric-only mode, the car becomes a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV), with a combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.9 litres/100 km (57.7 mpg) and just 119 g/km of CO2. When both petrol and electric power is used simultaneously, the four-wheel-drive SR1 develops 230 kW (313 bhp).
The vehicle houses three people with the third rear seat in the middle, behind the two front seats. Entry to this seat is facilitated by the centre console, which slides forward.
The interior ambience blends colours and materials, with strong references to “a past motoring era” combined with “the latest advanced technology”. The construction of the fascia panel, optimised to perfection, gives a visual prominence to certain mechanical components such as the steering column and a number of peripheral controls. Similarly, the instrumentation combines analogue and digital read-outs, giving clear emphasis to every item of information conveyed to the driver. This is the case for instantaneous fuel consumption and vehicle range, displayed on two glass crystal gauges directly in front of the driver.

Another technological innovation is the creation of an exclusive wristwatch, designed in partnership with Bell&Ross®. This timepiece, with milled inserts of solid aluminium, slots perfectly into a dedicated housing on the fascia panel.
Full details of the SR1 will be released at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, in March.

Blancpain Spécialités Tourbillon Diamants Watch

 (Blancpain Spécialités Tourbillon Diamants)

When speaking about very expensive watches, we usually tend to think that the price must be proportional to the quantity of precious jewels it could contain. Most of these timepieces do not have any jewels (aside from synthetic rubies in the movement). An answer could be the time involved in making them.
Blancpain is one of the luxurius brands capable of producing a neatly pack with a healthy amount of impressive jewel work in the 40mm wide white gold case of its newest flagship haute joaillerie watch for men.
The Blancpain Spécialités Tourbillon Diamants timepieces were produced in a limited edition in which, the time of craftsmanship is gold as intense hours are required to simply select the proper stones and then cut them. Its timepiece dial, bezel, crown and rear reveal a complex patterning of various baguette cut stones. Twelve lines of diamonds form the dial in order to serve as hour markers.
The count of over 20 carats of diamonds in the watch might convey that Blancpain is attempting to present this Spécialités Tourbillon Diamants as merely a vehicle for diamond splendor, it is rather closer to an horological obligation. The high houses of watch making must continue to assert themselves mechanically as well as luxuriously. Blancpaine favors 18k white gold and a dizzying amount of diamonds being an obvious expression of this concept. It is then the responsibility of the brand to ensure its latest haute joaillerie offering is also aesthetically pleasing and awe inspiring. The privilege to call one yours comes with the approximate price of $1,342,700.

Timepiece main characteristics:

40mm wide 18k white gold watch case
Flying tourbillion carriage window
Caliber 25A in-house automatic mechanical movement visible through sapphire caseback
Reptile strap with matching 18k gold diamond covered buckle
164 baguette-cut diamonds on dial with total 20.14 carats of diamonds on watch
